Korean Skincare Routine Order: The Right Steps for Morning and Night (10-Step vs 4-Step)

The famous Korean 10-step routine looks complicated, but it follows one simple rule: thinnest to thickest, water before oil, sunscreen last. Get the order right and every product works better; get it wrong and expensive serums sit on top of cream doing nothing. This guide gives you the correct Korean skincare routine order for morning and night, the full 10 steps, a fast 4-step version for busy days, routines by skin type, and the actives you should never stack in the same step.

Why skincare order matters

Each layer has to reach the skin before the next one seals it off. Watery products (toners, essences) absorb fastest, serums and ampoules carry the most concentrated actives, and creams and oils create a film that slows water loss. Put a cream first and the serum after it barely gets through. The American Academy of Dermatology makes the same point: the sequence affects how well products work, and piling on too many can irritate skin.

Three rules cover almost every case:

  1. Thinnest to thickest. Liquid, then gel, then serum, then cream.
  2. Water-based before oil-based. Oils and occlusive creams go last (before SPF in the morning).
  3. Sunscreen is always the final skincare step in the morning, before makeup.

The Korean 10-step routine, in order

Korean skincare routine order in 10 steps with products: oil cleanser, water cleanser, exfoliant, toner, essence, ampoule, sheet mask, eye care, moisturizer, sunscreen

Not every step is daily. Here is the full sequence and how often each one belongs in your routine.

Step What it does When
1. Oil cleanser Dissolves sunscreen, makeup and excess sebum PM
2. Water-based cleanser Removes sweat, residue and what the oil loosened AM + PM
3. Exfoliant Clears dead cells and congestion (pads, AHA/BHA/PHA) 1–3× a week, PM
4. Toner Rebalances and adds a first layer of hydration AM + PM
5. Essence Lightweight hydration and repair; preps for actives AM + PM
6. Serum / ampoule Targets one concern with concentrated actives AM + PM
7. Sheet mask 15–20 minute boost of hydration or calming 2–3× a week, PM
8. Eye care Gentler formula for thin under-eye skin AM + PM
9. Moisturizer Seals everything in and supports the barrier AM + PM
10. Sunscreen Protects against UVA/UVB, the main driver of visible aging AM only

Steps 1–2: double cleansing

Double cleansing at the sink: hands emulsifying Anua Heartleaf Cleansing Oil, with COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser beside it

Sunscreen, makeup and sebum are oil-based, so water and foam alone leave a film behind. Massage an oil or balm onto dry skin for 30–60 seconds, add a splash of water so it turns milky, rinse, then follow with a gentle low-pH gel or foam. Researchers testing sunscreen removal found that a cleansing oil removed water-resistant sunscreen far better than water or a regular cleanser (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2019). In the morning one gentle cleanse, or just water, is enough.

Why low pH? Healthy skin sits around pH 4.7 (Lambers et al.), and alkaline cleansers push it up for hours. A low-pH cleanser keeps the barrier calmer. Shop routine essentials.

Steps 4–6: toner, essence, ampoule

These are the heart of a Korean routine: several thin, watery layers instead of one heavy cream. Pat each one in with your palms and move on once it feels absorbed, not dry. Your ampoule is where the target active lives: centella for calming, niacinamide for oil and tone, vitamin C for brightness, PDRN for repair.

Steps 9–10: moisturizer and sunscreen

Moisturizer locks the layers in; in winter, choose a ceramide cream (see our winter barrier repair guide). Sunscreen goes on last and generously: dermatologists suggest about two finger-lengths for the face (Hospital Clínic Barcelona). Most people apply far less and get a fraction of the SPF on the label. More in our Korean sunscreen guide.

The 4-step routine for busy days

You don't need ten products to get the Korean result. Dermatologists agree that fewer, well-chosen products lower the risk of irritation. The four non-negotiables:

Step Morning Evening
1. Cleanse Low-pH gel cleanser or water Oil cleanser + low-pH gel cleanser
2. Hydrate Toner or essence Toner or essence
3. Moisturize Light cream or gel cream Richer cream (add one serum if you like)
4. Protect / treat SPF 50 Your one treatment active, if any

Start here, then add one step at a time, every 1–2 weeks, so you can tell what each product actually does.

Morning vs night routine

Morning is about protection: gentle cleanse, toner, a light antioxidant serum such as vitamin C, moisturizer and sunscreen. Keep it light so sunscreen and makeup sit well.

Night is about repair: double cleanse, then your treatment actives (retinoids, exfoliating acids, PDRN), richer moisturizer and, a few times a week, a sheet mask or sleeping pack. Skin loses more water overnight, so this is the time for heavier textures.

Routine by skin type

Skin type Keep Skip or limit Shop
Dry Cleansing milk or oil, 2 layers of toner, ceramide cream Foaming cleansers twice a day, frequent acids Dry skin
Oily / combination Double cleanse at night, niacinamide, gel cream Heavy creams and facial oils in the morning Niacinamide
Sensitive 4-step routine, centella, panthenol, mineral or gentle SPF Fragrance, scrubs, several actives at once Sensitive skin
Acne-prone Low-pH cleanser, BHA 2–3× a week, light moisturizer Over-washing, thick occlusive balms on breakouts Acne care

Where actives go (and what not to mix)

Actives belong in the serum/ampoule step, after toner and essence and before cream. A few pairings are better split between morning and night:

Active Best time Don't layer with
Vitamin C Morning, under SPF Strong acids in the same step
Retinol / retinal Night only AHA/BHA on the same night
AHA / BHA / PHA Night, 1–3× a week Retinoids, other exfoliants
Niacinamide Morning or night Pairs well with most actives
PDRN, peptides Morning or night Pairs well with most actives

Deep dives: vitamin C, retinoids and peptides, PDRN.

6 common routine mistakes

  1. Moisturizer before serum. The serum can't get through. Thin layers first.
  2. Sunscreen under moisturizer. SPF is the last skincare step, then makeup.
  3. Too little sunscreen. Use about two finger-lengths for the face, more for the neck.
  4. Stacking actives. Retinol plus acids plus vitamin C on the same night is a fast way to a damaged barrier.
  5. Skipping the oil cleanse after SPF. Leftover sunscreen causes congestion and dullness.
  6. Adding five new products at once. Introduce one every 1–2 weeks and patch-test first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct order for a Korean skincare routine?

Oil cleanser, water-based cleanser, exfoliant (weekly), toner, essence, serum or ampoule, sheet mask (weekly), eye care, moisturizer, then sunscreen in the morning. The rule is thinnest to thickest.

Do I really need 10 steps?

No. Cleanser, toner or essence, moisturizer and sunscreen cover the essentials. Add steps only when they solve a specific concern.

Does toner or essence go first?

Toner first, then essence. Toner is thinner and preps skin; essence is slightly richer and starts the treatment layers.

Should I double cleanse in the morning?

Usually not. There's no sunscreen or makeup to remove, so a single gentle cleanser or plain water is enough.

How long should I wait between layers?

Just until each layer feels absorbed, usually 30–60 seconds. Give sunscreen a few minutes to set before makeup.

Where does a facial oil go?

After moisturizer at night, or mixed into it. In the morning, it goes before sunscreen, never on top.

The bottom line

The Korean routine works because of its order, not its length: cleanse twice at night, layer watery products from thin to thick, seal with cream and finish with sunscreen every morning. Start with four steps, add one at a time, and let your skin tell you what it needs.
